Retta was one of our accidental rescues, and a member of the Moo Crew.
Meet Retta...
We don't have too many pictures of Retta, she was not here for a long time (we sold her to a family we knew to help pay for Max's surgery). I suppose she would have been what you call our "good personality" horse. While her physical appearance wasn't overly beautiful, her temperament was definitely so; very sweet and gentle. Along with Max and Cinnamon, Retta was another of our accidental rescues. She returned to us when her new owners became interested in showing, as she no longer suited their horse needs.
She was our resident "Senior Citizen" and we called her our "Rice Krispy Horse" (she had an awful lot of snap, crackle and pop in those old joints). Thankfully, it never seemed to bother her much. Over the past few years, Retta lost her vision to cataracts and was completely blind (her buddy Max took pretty good care of her). We will all miss her very much.
Favorite Retta Anecdote: MY Girl
Being the only girl in the Moo Crew, Retta got lots of attention from Max and Shadow who took turns vying for her affection and each sneaking her away from the other one (it got mighty entertaining, I can tell you :o)
Shadow would be munching away on grass with his girlfriend and suddenly find an undiscovered patch of the green stuff (yum!) which - of course - captured his immediate attention. Enter Max (who had been waiting for just such a golden opportunity). The moment he saw that Shadow wasn't watching, he would sneak up and nudge Retta further up the hill so he could have her for himself. Shadow then looks up to find his woman has left him for another man - sigh - which made him morally obligated to go and get her back (so then we would just start all over again :o)
Other than her slightly bewildered expression, Retta never seemed to mind all of the attention...
What did she teach us?
That with a few careful adjustments, horses can manage quite well without their vision. She knew exactly how far it was to her stall from the bottom of the pasture. Every day - twice a day - at breakfast and supper she would come down the hill, walk past the stalls and make a loop in the corner to get her bearings before continuing on to her stall (she rarely missed - clever girl, our Retta! :o)
Photos: Mowing the pasture :o) soaking up some rays, and Retta's happy return to the Moo Crew - she's kind of in the middle of everyone there.
